Dr.

Partnership: Sourcing Foreign Direct Investment for
Poverty Alleviation in SAARC Countries at a roundtable
discussion organised by the SAARC Chamber of Commerce
and Industries (SCCI). The discussion was held during
September 29- October 1, 2002 in the Maldives.

part in the Commonwealth Civil Society Consultation
Meeting held during July 22-23, 2002 in London as a
resource person. The Consultation Meeting was organised

Professor Mustafizur Rahman attended the Asian Consultation
Meeting on Development Effectiveness Report (DER) 2003
which was held in Beijing, China during September 11-14,
2002. The Consultation Meeting was organised by the
UNDP.

Consultation on Delivering the Monterrey Consensus during
July12-13, 2002 which was held in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
The Consultation Meeting was organised by the UNDP.

GATS Conference, Delhi
CPD Research Fellow Dr. Ananya Raihan participated in
the SAARC Regional Conference on GATS held on August
20, 2002 in New Delhi, India. Dr. Raihan presented the
keynote paper titled GATS and Implications for Bangladesh
at this Conference. The Conference was jointly organised
by the SAARC Chamber of Commerce and Industries (SCCI)
and the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and
Industries (FCCI).

Dr. Ananya Raihan attended the International Conference
on E-Commerce held in the Pakistan capital of Islamabad
during September 18-19, 2002. The Conference was jointly

Regional Consultation Meeting on Farmers'
Rights, Kathmandu, Nepal
CPD Research Fellow Dr. Uttam Kumar Deb attended the
second Regional Consultation Meeting on Protecting Farmers'
Rights to Livelihood in the Hindu Kush-Himalayas Region
during August 17-18, 2002. Dr. Deb presented a paper
on Plant Breeders' Rights and Farmers' Rights: Are They
Mutually Compatible? The meeting was jointly organised
by South Asia Watch on Trade, Economics and Environment
(SAWTEE), and International Centre for Integrated Mountain
Development (ICIMOD).

Certificate Course on Commercial Diplomacy,
Carleton University, Ottawa
CPD Research Fellows Dr. Ananya Raihan and Dr. Uttam
Kumar Deb attended a Certificate Course on Trade Policy
and Commercial Diplomacy in Ottawa, Canada during June
27-July 6, 2002. The course was organized by Centre
for Trade Policy and Law (CTPL), Carleton University,
Ottawa, Canada with which CPD is collaborating in the
implementation of its Trade Policy Programme. Dr. Raihan
and Dr. Deb also conducted studies on E-commerce and
Agreement on Agriculture whilst in Canada during their
six-week stay in Ottawa.

Discussion on Competition Policy,
Geneva
CPD Research Associate Mr. Kazi Mahmudur Rahman took
part in the discussion on Competition Policy and Law
in the Developing Countries under the 7-Up Project on
Competition Policy during July 5-6, 2002 in Geneva.
The programme was jointly organised by the Consumer
Unity and Trust Society (CUTS), Centre for International
Trade, Economics and Environment (CITEE), India with
support from the UNCTAD and the DFID, UK.
CPD Social Lunch
CPD
hosted a Social Lunch on August 22, 2002 which was attended
by both the current and former staffs of the CPD. The
lunch provided a welcome opportunity to all CPD staff
to meet one another. A number of well wishers of the
CPD also joined the lunch.
