Implications
of the Doha Ministerial
Under
the CPD programme on Trade Policy Analysis and Monitoring the Impact
of WTO, CPD has prepared a policy brief titled Interpreting Doha
Ministerial Decisions for Bangladesh. The brief highlighted the
implications of the decisions taken at the Fourth Ministerial Meeting
at Doha for Bangladesh and identified a number of key areas where
Bangladesh will need to undertake concrete actions to address the
emerging concerns.
CPD-UNFPA
study on Populationand Sustainable Development
Over
the last few years ,CPD has been implementing a programme on Population
and Sustainable Development in collaboration with the United Nations
Population Fund (UNFPA). The programme envisages to conduct a series
of studies in a number of key areas of concern for Bangladesh such
as consequences of demographic momentum and aging, interface between
poverty and population, impact of urbanisation, migration and environment,
population concerns in macroeconomic policies, and human rights.
During this
period a research study titled An Investigation into Fertility Behaviour
of Married Adolescent Girls has been completed. A publication titled
"Probeen" (the Elderly) has also been brought out by the
CPD during this period. The publication draws on the available data
and information and envisages to sensitise the policy makers and
also the general public as regards problems of the elderly.
CPD-TERI
Study on CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITY
Under
its programme on Investment Promotion and Enterprise Development
in Bangladesh, CPD is currently doing a research on Corporate Responsibility.
A draft report has been prepared and will be presented and discussed
at a CPD dialogue. The study is being implemented in collaboration
with Tata Energy Research Institute (TERI-Europe). The study is
based on information generated through extensive field survey and
key informant debriefing.
CPD
Reviewed the PRSP Preparation Process
As
the GOB has started to prepare a poverty reduction Strategy Paper
(PRSP), the CPD undertook an initaitive to review the PRSP preparation
process as well as the status of the PRSP in Bangladesh. The CPD
review pointed out that the PRSP is seen as the sugar coating for
the reforms process and may face the same fate as the earlier generation
of unwound reforms. CPD argued that a credible PRSP must emerge
out of a credible process of public and political consultation.
It must be debated and endorsed by the Parliament which should not
only commit its support to the PRSP, but also should have the commitment
to implement the strategy.
