Prof. Rehman Sobhan

Prof. Rehman Sobhan attended a conference on Bangladesh in the New Millennium arranged by the School of Economics, University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia on January 30-31, 2002. He presented the keynote paper on the theme Bangladesh on the Threshold of the 21st Century: Agenda for Change.

Delhi Summit

Prof. Rehman Sobhan attended a summit on Sustainable Development at the Indian capital of New Delhi on February 8-11, 2002 which was organized by the Tata Energy Research Institute (TERI). Professor Sobhan spoke on Financing Development at the 2nd plenary session of the summit.

Executive Director of CPD, Dr. Debapriya Bhattacharya attended a meeting on Assessing Linkage between Micro and Macro Level Issues in New Delhi, India on February 13,2002.The meeting was organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).


Prof. Rehman Sobhan
Delivers the BIDS Public Lecture

CPD Chairman Prof. Rehman Sobhan delivered a Public Lecture at the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) on January 15, 2002 as part of the Millennium Celebration Programme of BIDS. The theme of the lecture was The Evolving Political Economy of Bangladesh in the Age of Globalization. In the lecture, Prof. Sobhan highlighted the probable features of the emerging political economy of Bangladesh and cautioned that the socio-political fallout from Bangladesh's uneven and unprepared encounter with globalization could drive her along unpredictable and socially disruptive directions.

•Workshop in Hanoi

CPD Executive Director Dr. Debapriya Bhattacharya attended a workshop on Strategy for Rural Development in the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi during February 26-28, 2002. Jointly organized by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), the workshop focussing on the World Bank's newly formulated strategy for rural development.

•UNEP workshop in Geneva

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) conducted a workshop on Impacts of Trade Related Policies on Fisheries on March 15, 2002 with a view to contributing to the meeting of the WTO Committee on Trade and Development during March 21-22, 2002. Executive Director of CPD, Dr. Debapriya Bhattacharya along with Dr Fahmida A Khatun presented a paper at the workshop.


Prof. Mustafizur Rahman

•Conference on WTO in Delhi
CPD Research Director Prof. Mustafizur Rahman attended the conference on WTO and South Asia: Lessons and Strategies at New Delhi on March 9-10, 2002. The conference was organized by the Consumer Unity & Trust Society (CUTS) of India. Prof. Rahman made a presentation on WTO Agreement on SPS-TBT and Market Access Implications for South Asia.

CPD Programme Director (Transport and Communination) Dr M Rahmatullah attended a regional workshop on Transport, Planning, Demand Management and Air Quality in Manila, the capital of the Philippines, which was held on February 26-March 1, 2002. The workshop was organised by the Asian Development Bank (ADB)

CPD Programme Director (Transport and Communination) Dr M Rahmatullah presented a paper at the second meeting of the ADB Transport Working Group in Kathmandu, Napal which was held on March 12-13, 2002

•JSTOR Meeting in Bangalore

The Head of the Dialogue and Communication Division of CPD Ms. Anisatul Fatema Yousuf attended the JSTOR meeting on January 21, 2002 held at Banglore, India. The meeting aimed at identifying the needs of the relevant organizations in South Asia and exploring the possibility of their membership with the JSTOR, a privately run internet service provider which maintains a rich archive of journals.
