Women Workers and Export

CPD has initiated a study on Recent Deceleration in Export of Bangladesh and Women Workers: Impact and Coping Strategies. Dr. Kaniz Siddique, Associate Professor, North South University is conducting the study for CPD. The draft report of the study is currently under review.

Collaborative Research
under SANEI-III

CPD is currently implementing a research programme titled The Trade Potentials of South Asian Economies under New Global Trade Regimes: The Role of Some Non-Price Factors under the auspices of the South Asian Network of Economic Institute (SANEI). The study team members are Professor Sugata Marjit of the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Kolkata, Professor Ajitava Raychaudhury and Dr. Rajat Acharya of the Department of Economics, Jadavpur University, Kolkata, Dr. Debapriya Bhattacharya, Professor Mustafizur Rahman and Dr. Manzur Alam Tipu of CPD. A progress report of the study is expected to be submitted at the Fourth Annual Conference of the SANEI to be held in Dhaka during August 28-29, 2002.

Public Policy Audit

CPD plans to carry out a study on Public Policy Audit. A research proposal on Civil Society Audit of Public Policy in Bangladesh has been designed for the study.


Global Competitiveness
Report (GCR) 2002


The Global Competitiveness Report brought out by the World Economic Forum (WEF), Geneva, in collaboration with the Centre for International Development of Harvard University, is recognised as an authoritative source of international business competitiveness assessment. The report provides a wide range of information on key variables determining firm level competitive strength in selected countries. In continuance of its GCR survey for 2001, CPD conducted yet another survey in 2002 in order to assess the state of competitiveness environment in Bangladesh.

South Asia Sub-regional Economic Cooperation (SASEC)

The South Asia Sub-regional Economic Cooperation (SASEC) study programme aims at identifying appropriate policies for the economic development of the sub-region comprising Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and seven North East states of India. Under this programme CPD has conducted a study titled Making Bangladesh-India Economic Cooperation Work: Current Status and Modalities for Realizing the Potentials. The study focuses on barriers to economic cooperation in the sub-region.


Study on Trade-Environment
Nexus in Marine Fisheries

CPD in collaboration with The Economics and Trade Unit (ETU) and United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) completed a research titled Environmental Impact of Trade Liberalization and Trade-Related Policies on the Marine Fisheries Sector in Bangladesh. The study put forward a set of policies which Bangladesh could pursue to promote sustainability of the exhaustible marine resource in the context of Bangladesh. Dr. Fahmida Akther Khatun, Research Fellow, BIDS is collaborating with CPD as Principal Researcher for this study.



Child Labour Policy in
Bangladesh

CPD prepared a research proposal for the International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labor (IPEC) which will look into various issues related to the child labour Policy in Bangladesh. The study aims at strengthening the integration of child labour issues into national development strategies. This study will be implemented in collaboration with the International Labor Organization (ILO). Dr Sumaiya Khair, Associate Professor, Department of Law, University of Dhaka is collaborating with CPD as Principal Researcher for this study.
