About Dhaka LDC Forum 2005
In connection with the forthcoming WTO Ministerial Meeting in Hong Kong in December 2005 and as part of its activism to promote and advance the interests and concerns of Least Developed Countries (LDCs) in the ongoing negotiations under the Doha Development Agenda, the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), Bangladesh organised a Civil Society Forum in Dhaka, Bangladesh titled Pre-Hong Kong International LDC Civil Society Forum during 3-5 October 2005.

The objectives of the proposed Forum were:

  • to create an opportunity to advocate stakeholders’ concerns and provide a platform for interaction on issues of concern among various civil society organisations, networks, and special interest and advocacy groups from various regions of the globe;
  • to prepare a Declaration on civil society’s views, as regards LDC perspectives, on the Hong Kong Agenda;
  • to prepare a list of priority issues to be considered by LDC Trade Ministers. civil society groups as regards LDC positions on those issues and proposals.

National Advisory Committee (NAC)
A National Advisory Committee (NAC) was  formed  with the participation from Bangladesh’s 27 leading non-government organisations, business  chambers, trade unions,  gender groups and environmental groups and individuals having demonstrated interest in global trade issues.

Speakers
The Forum has been addressed by Ministers, leaders of civil society think tanks, development organisations, non-government organizations, apex bodies and academics, and stakeholders from home and abroad. Trade experts and eminent personalities chaired the sessions on various themes. Air Vice Marshal (Retd) Altaf Hossain Choudhury, Minister for Commerce, Government of Bangladesh, inaugurated the Forum.

Dhaka Civil Society Forum 2003
CPD organised a very successful International Civil Society Forum in May 2003 The Forum in 2003 was attended by about 150 participants from 13 countries and was co-organised by five leading international civil society organisations such as the Consumers International, Malaysia, EU-LDC Network, the Netherlands, Oxfam International, South Asia Watch on Trade, Economics and Environment (SAWTEE), Nepal and Southern and Eastern African Trade Information and Negotiations Institute (SEATINI), Zimbabwe. The Civil Society Declaration and the proceedings of the meeting generated important inputs for activities which took place during the run up to the Cancun Ministerial.

Letter to LDC Trade Ministers
The Forum extended its full support for the LDC agenda in Cancun. As a follow up to this Forum, the co-organisers sent out a letter to LDC Trade Ministers before the Ministerial urging them to take a united position at the meeting.
